Most vulnerable cylinders: why you should replace your Ezcurra DS-15

Quick answer: if your door has an Ezcurra DS-15 or another basic cylinder without anti-bump protection, it is one of the most vulnerable to burglary. Replacing it with a high-security anti-bump cylinder (from €110) is the cheapest and most effective way to protect your home in Mijas and Marbella.

The cylinder is where you insert the key and, at the same time, the point through which most home burglaries happen. The problem is that not all of them protect the same: some very widespread models offer very little resistance to today's burglary techniques. The Ezcurra DS-15: common and vulnerable

The Ezcurra DS-15 is one of the most installed cylinders in entrances, flats and villas across the Costa del Sol, especially in older builds. It is cheap and does the job of locking the door… but it offers very little resistance to current burglary techniques. That's why it's a common target for intruders.

We won't explain here how it is opened —that's not information we should spread—, but if your home or your community has one, the professional advice is clear: replace it. The good news is you don't need to change the whole lock; in most cases it's enough to swap the cylinder for a high-security one.

3 signs your cylinder is vulnerable

• It's old or "came with the house": cylinders over 10-15 years old rarely have anti-bump protection.
• The key is flat and simple: no dimples, no ownership card and easy to copy anywhere.
• The cylinder sticks out of the door: if it protrudes more than 2-3 mm, it's easier to manipulate. An armoured escutcheon protects it.
